March 2002 QuestionsMarch 2002 QuestionsDigger Odell Publications © 2000I would like to know how they get a cork into a bottle of champagne? Thecork appears to be so much bigger than the top of the bottle and we have hadquite a discussion regarding this at a party recently and we are all curiousabout it. HarleejThe answer is quite simple. Theyused a cork press like the one shown below. You would wet the corks then putlift the handle. Put the cork into the press and press down on the handle. The wheel would turn the cork and compress it. then before it sprang backit would be inserted into the bottle. Modern bottlers no longer use cork for thecheap stuff but those that do probably used a mechanized process. Digger.Good morning, Very informative web site you have. I am a Glass Artist with a BFA in glass so I am very familiar with blown glass and the properties thatoriginal pieces possess as opposed to repo or production glass. With this notedI would like to ask your professional opinion on an EC Bottle that I have. Inoted in your descriptions of the original vs. the repo similarities from bothcategories, however the bottle I have also bears some unusual characteristicsthat are not described in your extensive research material. This bottle, amberin color stands 7. 5 "tall with 1 7/8 " neck (included in total size). The neck is one inch across with a 3/4 inch opening (corked) and a tapered roundcollar. It has no apparent mold seams. The glass quality is good but clearlyfrom a pot with air bubbles trapped and small granular irregularities throughout. There appears to be marvered marking on the front and bottom . Although itlooks like a good blow, the glass is thicker in some areas than other and not consistent through out Particularly on the bottom. . The lettering: On the roofthe C in EC looks almost like a G. The S is just slightly to the left under theC in Cabin. There are two small periods under the T in ST on the address. Thebottom of the bottle only bears the words ( in upper case) BOOZE BOTTLE. For allpurposes this bottle resembles a proof for a mold rather than a reproduction. . . . I am obviously excited by that possibility. Please see the attached photos. Iwould greatly appreciate your feedback on this bottle . Thank you. J. ReadI have not heard of an base embossed Booze bottle. I would need a number of close up pictures to be more helpful. DiggerHi there we had this bottle for very long time and wondering how old is thebottle and what's it worth? and who is the manufacturer and where is it beenmade? It has the letters TI and 160 underneath it. regards melinaI tend to think it might be new. I am judging this based on the cap which I can not really see well. the form is not an older one although the glass color is indicative of 19th century bottles. digger.Sir; Have a 1 pint bottle of Old Taylor Whiskey, 100 proof. I found them about 25 years ago and they are still in mint condition. I have searched the internet everywhere and i have yet to find anyone that has one of them. The first is a beams choice kentucky straight bourbon whiskey bottle. The bottle is wooden with a wooden screwon top. It has a picture of a man riding a horse. This was painted by frederick remington, a famous painter whose picture is on the back of the bottle, along with his life history. There is a serial number on top of the wooden lid with the numbers 049663304. I know this is a very old bottle. The second bottle i have is an antique whiskey bottle that is very heavy metal. It doesn't have a brand name on it, only a drawing of a man holding a glass with the words "the merry lute player" at the bottom of the drawing. On the back is a description of the artist. His name is frans hals. He was born in 1581-85 and died in 1666. This bottle is older than the jim beam bottle but is still in fairly good condition. If you have any information on these bottles, please let me know. I would love to know their history. It is a 10 oz. disposable clear glass bottle. The front side is Coke andthe back side is Pepsi or visa versa. I worked in a glass plant where we weremaking non refillable pop bottles for Coke. Then the next week we were makingthem for Pepsi. The men running the machines decided to use half a Pepsi moldand half a Coke mold to make a bottle since the molds were nearly identical. This was without anyone else in the glass plants knowledge of course. It wasdone on the night shift. To my recollection around 25 bottles were kept. Theywere made in Sand Springs, Ok. at Kerr Glass Mfg. in 1978. Kerr Glass has beenbought out since then and is no longer in business. I am the owner of three ofthese bottles. I have no idea if anyone else still has there bottles or not. These are real Coke and Pepsi logos, not any type of after market bottles. Its 5" high & in excellent condition. Thanks, Gale KellyThese jugs are quite common because they were made over many years. The jugs are made by the McCormick Company. Based on the trademark information below, I do not believe they were making the crockery jugs prior to 1955. Most seem to have come from the 1960-1970s. The jugs come in a variety of sizes: pints, 1/2 pints and 750 mL. they appear to be dated on the base. Ron --------------------------------------------------------------------------------From: Heather McArthur Subject: bottle questionsDate: 11-03-2002I have several bottles that I am about to sell. I have been out of collecting for several years and these have been stored and idle. I see from looking at your site, bottles have increased in price since I stopped collecting. First, these were collected in and around Columbus,Ms. , a very old southern city that has a very long historical origin. I will describe them as honestly as I can. 1) bitters type, iron pontil, applied lip with band, emerald in color,12" tall and 12" girth, long neck slightly offcenter, it has a slightly rippled texture. no embossing,no label,no cracks, chips or damage;2)"dug",8"ht. ,7" girth, iron pontil, applied lip(very small chip in the very top of lip) banded, jade green color average condition as most "dug" bottles. Actually, this bottle was found in a cutoff run of the Tombigbee River where the original port to Columbus was at one time;3) red to amber, double collared, open pontil, the top has threads inside the neck as to accept a screw-in type cap, similar to some laboratory bottles, very thick, it also has a seam that runs around the girth about 2. 75" from the bottom ,this bottle has a crack in the bottom corner but not completely thru glass. Any help in approximate pricing would be helpful. The first one is cobolt blue, 12" tall, 5" in diameter, with JNO WYETH & BRO and PHILADA. embossed near the top of the bottle. I vaguely remember my mother saying it had contained some kind of chicken medicine-my late grandfather ran a chicken hatchery. The other bottle is 14" tall, aqua-green in color, looks like a wine bottle, with leaves and flowers embossed nearly to the top. It looks like the bottle-top was applied separately-the bottle has several bubbles in it, and has L ROIL & CO, an indented bottom with what looks like J K & P and 545 (???) on the bottom. Again, if memory serves me right, I think it may have held lime water or lime juice. Thanks for your time-your web-site is a great source of information. There is writing on the bottom I cannot read. The word OXYNTIN is in bold letters on the top of a label and under the label are the ingredients. It states it is registered in the U. S Patent Office. At the bottom it states Manufactured by Fairchild Bros and Foster, New York. Do you know what this is?? Thank you. Beverages/Fred Rupp Bottling CompanyDate: 11-03-2002I am an 'ancestor' of the man that had the soda factory that I mentioned in subject. I have two bottles, and much info on the company itself. I was wondering if you have come accross these brands before, as I am always searching to 'buy back' my family's history! So far, the only 2 I have located are from my own family passing them down. They are from the early/mid 1800s I believe. One is blue/green squareish, with J S Rupp Jermyn, PA written on it. It even has a funny stopper thing that is hanging in the mouth piece. The other is clear glass, more standard shaped, it says 'Fred Rupp Bottling company' Port Jervis, New York and on the top it says registered. Later on, I think he changed the factory name to "Twin Mtn. Beverages" my mom has a bottle that says that on it, and I have an ashtray with that name. I hope I didn't bore you, but for some reason I have an obsession with glassware, especially old bottles, of anything, tang, or syrup, etc. . And I think it was neat that you are an expert! (the cork is broken off and wedged into the neck of the bottle. ) on the side, alongside the handle, it reads "Dickle Tennessee First Bottling - October 1964". running along the top of the bottom leather under the main label, the glass reads "Souvenir Bottle" but, more interestingly, under the smaller label it reads "27 years of stubbornness but we made it. " i can send a picture if you'd like. I'm curious as to if this is worth anything. thanks for your time, and keep up the good work, digger. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------From: KhorkiSubject: Old bottleDate: 12-03-2002Been trying to find out about this bottle that my late wife bought for me at a yard sale about 8 years ago.
